New episode today! As usual, this one is jam packe New episode today! As usual, this one is jam packed with information and I still feel like we just scratched the surface. 🤪 Diamond mining is such a global venture. It is laden with history, and affects so many of the world’s nations right now. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did making it. 💎 #worldhistory #diamondmining #globalliteracy #wiserworld
If you’ve ever walked by a jeweler in the mall a If you’ve ever walked by a jeweler in the mall and wondered where all those diamonds came from (or how we even started wearing diamond jewelry to begin with), then this episode is for you. 💎

The history of diamonds is truly fascinating—and heartbreaking. This episode is jam-packed with info and I still barely scratch the surface. Share what you learned in the comments below 👇

Hello! I realized the other day that in almost a y Hello! I realized the other day that in almost a year of podcasting, I’ve never done an “About Me” post. Whoops.

So here’s a little about me:

1. My name is Alli. Like all Allis (Allies, Alis, Allys, Alys…) on this planet, my name has been misspelled my entire life, so if you also have one of these kinds of names, I see you. I am you.

2. I used to teach 9th grade World History, and now I stay home with my kids. I started Wiser World when I realized that most adults I knew who had been out of school for awhile had forgotten (or never learned) foundational world history, and then struggled to find context for current events. Many felt disconnected and ignorant on global topics, which is no fun. So the podcast was born (after two long years of stewing about it, ha) to help solve that.

3. My brain is like a border collie: if it doesn’t have a project, it will destroy everything. 🤪 My podcast is the project that keeps me from fixating on silly perfectionist shenanigans I convince myself must be done (they don’t).

4. When grapefruit is in season, I could eat three a day, plain. Yup. I also discovered eggs benedict for the first time at 32 years old and can’t believe I lived that long without it. 😋

5. I read cookbooks for fun. Send me your favorites!

6. I cannot handle when people say, “Oh, I want to travel to Switzerland, Japan, Argentina, and Africa.” AFRICA IS A CONTINENT, NOT A COUNTRY. TO WHICH COUNTRY IN AFRICA DO YOU WANT TO GO. Yes, I get riled up about that one. 😬🙈#worldhistoryteacherproblems

7. I love learning the stories of people around the world, now and across the centuries. What they have been able to endure, overcome, and create is inspiring and very rooting to me in this chaotic world we live in. Studying the world gives me perspective, empathy, and, hopefully, a little wisdom, and I hope it does the same for you as you listen.

Thanks for being here and learning with me. 💙🌍🤓

To many cultures (over 1.5 billion people!), Lunar To many cultures (over 1.5 billion people!), Lunar New Year is a multi-day holiday that is the highlight of the year. 🏮This year it begins in China and many other Asian countries on Sunday, January 22nd—coming up!

In this short episode, I share the foundational basics of Lunar New Year. I loved learning about this holiday. While I didn’t grow up celebrating it, I appreciate so many of the joyful traditions. Plus, I love a clean house so that part is always welcome to me 😉.

For the past few months I’ve been working on a l For the past few months I’ve been working on a little project! The goal of this podcast has always been to create what I wish I had, and I wish I had someone consistently talking to me about world topics. I get stuck in my own little head sometimes and need expanding of my perspective, too. While I love the 101 Country episodes, they are quite time intensive in research because they span sooo much history, so I can’t publish them frequently at this stage in my life. And there is still so much history and world topics I want to talk about (and learn!).

So, I am starting something new this year! Twice a month I will share shorter episodes on all kinds of topics—holidays, single events, important people, etc. The first one comes out TOMORROW!

What world topics do you want to know about? Tell me in the comments below, and I might do an episode on it. 😁🌎

I am at the tail end of 4 weeks of traveling/being I am at the tail end of 4 weeks of traveling/being away from home, and it has given me much needed time to think about how I use my time, what matters most to me, etc. (Another reason to love the world: it’s so grounding for me.)

I love doing the podcast and want to continue, yet the #1 issue I’ve had has been figuring out a regular cadence. It seems like everyone says to publish on a dependable schedule, but I’m realizing most of those people are doing a very different kind of podcasting than I’m doing (lifestyle, parenting, self improvement, interview-based, etc).

In my case, each country takes a different amount of time, and the episodes take a lot of time to research and craft. Each country almost takes on a life of its own, and I find myself wanting to follow each country’s nuanced rhythm and not force or rush the process. I want to continue to do quality work—that really matters to me—but I need more flexibility! Plus, I have little kids at home and feel that pull to be more present with them.

So, for now, I’ve decided to not have a fixed publishing schedule for 101 episodes and instead only publish when the episodes are good and done and just how I like them. 💪This means I will likely publish at a slower rate, but I will have more balance in my life, and more flexibility in the research and teaching process. Worth it.

I will post on here when new episodes go live, and I will also email you as well (you can join my email list on my website, link in bio). I’ll keep you in the loop!

My goal of this podcast has always been to create what I wish I had, so I’m going to keep rolling with it, but in my own time and in my own way. I hope you keep listening and sharing, and I’m grateful for a curious community and good folks who want to learn alongside me. 💙
I spend almost all my spare time studying world hi I spend almost all my spare time studying world history. I love it—it’s totally my jam and doing the podcast is a blast for me. The last 6 months I’ve been steeped in the histories of Russia, Ukraine, China, Taiwan, N Korea, Iran—all very unique and beautiful and tragic in their own ways. I have great love for the countries of the world, and yet all this deep study has me feeling extra sentimental about my United States today.

No doubt we have our flaws (our track record in the countries above certainly isn’t perfect and I’ll be the first to admit it), yet today as we went to the San Jose parade, I saw floats for “Sikhs Love America,” followed by the Scottish bagpipers, then the Colombian dancers, and behind them the Miss Vietnam of the U.S. float. Not to mention all the low rider Impalas. 😎 All different and unique, all united in that moment. I cried. I actually had to wipe my eyes on my son’s shirt. 😂

As we walked there, I saw signs in people’s yards: one saying “Shame on the Supreme Court,” another saying “Jesus 2024.” Trumps signs. Biden signs. Honestly I smiled at them all, regardless of whether I agreed or disagreed, because I am so grateful these folks can put their opinions on SIGNS in their FRONT YARDS and not be worried the secret police are going to come take them away tonight and they’ll never see their families again. When that’s what you’re reading in your spare time, it certainly makes you see things differently.

The more I learn about the world, the more I am all about diversity of thought. I am concerned about the growing division in the U.S. and in the world at large. I truly hope today and always that we can foster a variety of opinions with respect and tolerance. Because if we can’t, we are endangering the freedoms many of us have grown so accustomed to and take for granted so often. Studying the world has given me more perspective than I can express in one post, but I am grateful for a variety of opinions, and the freedom to express those differences openly. There is much work to do in the U.S., AND I am also very grateful for the freedoms we have and those who fought/fight for those freedoms.
