Many people don’t know that China and the island Many people don’t know that China and the island of Taiwan have been in a long-standing diplomatic standoff since 1949. Yup, that’s right. It is still going on today, 73 years later, and it’s absolutely worth our time to learn about it!

I’m excited for you to listen to Parts 1 & 2 of the Last 100 Years of Taiwan’s history, because I have absolutely loved studying Taiwan. What a beautiful place, with such a rich and unique history. I hope you learn something new. 🇹🇼

I love reading your reviews of the podcast, and wa I love reading your reviews of the podcast, and want to share a few every so often! No idea who wrote this, but thank you. 🧡 My favorite part is “the humanity comes through in each episode.” That is the goal. ⁣
⁣
If the podcast is benefitting your life, would you leave a review? I didn’t know this until I started podcasting myself, but shows with lots of reviews get more traction on the podcasting apps. So when you share and review, it means more people can find the show! ⁣🤗

I repeat these words to myself whenever I find mys I repeat these words to myself whenever I find myself wanting black-and-white history (or current events). It helps me be more clear-eyed and calm in the moments I want to be fearful and frantic. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Because in this world of simplified soundbites and short attention spans, I think our ability to tolerate multiple opposing concepts is waning. But the truth is: ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
- We can feel excited and terrified at the same time.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
- A group of people can endure great suffering at the hands of a conquering force, and then turn around and do the exact same thing to another group of people.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
- A country can do great economic good for another nation while simultaneously wrecking their culture. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
It’s just really… complex. ⁣⁣⁣⁣And I actually think it’s a sign of wisdom when we grapple with it. ⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
In my opinion, the point of studying history is not to fixate on the validity of every fact. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣
Instead, I think the point of studying history is to dive into the “grey zone” of complexity. Rarely are things simple. Not always is it the good guys against the bad guys (in fact, it rarely is). Learning history gives us a framework for noticing general themes and principles, and then letting those guide our intuition as we live through and watch current events. History gives context.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
The history is going to be subjective and flawed, because humans are subjective and flawed, and we write and teach the history. We have to just accept that. We have to sit in that messy place.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
But that shouldn’t stop us from trying to learn, because with learning comes critical thinking, with critical thinking comes the ability to handle complexity, with complexity comes maturity, and with maturity comes wisdom. With wisdom comes change. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
We get to sit in that grey, complex space, and determine what we think and why we think it, with what we believe at the time. Then we relearn when we know better information. Over and over on repeat we live the words of Maya Angelou, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” ⁣⁣This is why we learn history. If we want to be wise, we must study history.⁣
A very concise history of the last 100-ish years i A very concise history of the last 100-ish years in Ukraine. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Here in the U.S., we generally aren’t taught much about Eastern European countries, like Ukraine, in school. They are largely mysteries. My hope is that these episodes change that. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I researched long and deep on Ukraine’s past and then condensed it down to this reader’s digest version (which still packs a ton of info!). I kept having “oooh THAT’s why…🤔” and “ahhh that makes sense now!” moments when it comes to linking the past to what is currently happening in Ukraine. My guess is you will, too. There’s a lot to discuss here. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Why is Ukraine fighting so hard right now? Because Ukraine has fought for independence for HUNDREDS of years. This isn’t its first run-in with Russia, that’s for sure. Uncovering the history has broadened the scope through which I see this current war.⁣
⁣
The episodes are information-heavy, I’ll give you that, but I hope they are helpful. Obviously, figuring out what to keep and what to leave out was a challenge, but I did my best. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Remember: Feel free to pause. Relisten. (I talk fast sometimes, so turn down the speed if you need 🥴). Think it over. You aren’t in school or being tested! You are learning because this is important to know, and you care about what’s going on in another country and its people. I think that’s worth something. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Overall? The Ukrainian people have my deep respect. Their history is both fascinating and heartbreaking, and I loved learning about them. My heart is very heavy for what is happening there today. Context is everything and history matters. ⁣⁣

A concise and basic-level review of Russia in the A concise and basic-level review of Russia in the past 100-ish years. Albert Einstein said, “The definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple.” I am no genius, but I definitely tried to do what a genius would do here 😆. It was a challenge, for sure! Obviously, I leave a LOT out and I gloss over tons of things we could spend days and weeks learning about. But I did my best to share historical facts as we know them currently, to give you context. History matters. Context is everything.
⁣⁣
What I really hope is that it’s helpful and digestible. So much of what keeps people from learning history is that it can be so daunting. As you listen, feel free to stop, relisten, process in your own way. You’re not in a classroom, you’re not being tested. You’re listening on your own terms because you care. I think that’s awesome. Your teenage self didn’t know you had this in you! 😉⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Not all of my episodes will be this date and history-heavy—many will share more personal stories. But this moment in history demands context and background, so I went for it. Happy listening. ⁣Please share if this helps you. ⁣

When you listen to episodes 1 & 2, keep in mind th When you listen to episodes 1 & 2, keep in mind they were recorded a few weeks ago, so I said I’d be starting Season 1: West Asia/Middle East right away. But don’t be confused! ⁣
⁣
I’m instead going to do a mini-series on general history of some major countries to keep an eye on right now. ⁣
⁣
I have another episode or two coming TOMORROW on the last 100 years in Russia. Context helps. So we begin! ⁣

When Russia invaded Ukraine last week, suddenly it seems like everyone has been scrambling to figure out what is going on and why. “Wait, what happened in Crimea? When did the “Soviet Union” become “Russia” and what’s the difference? Remind me what NATO is? What is the KGB?” etc. ⁣
⁣
These are all questions answered by having a foundational understanding of world history: the whole purpose of this podcast. You don’t have to be a reporter or expert to have some idea of what’s going on before events take place. While knowledge doesn’t make the current events any less awful, I truly believe that if we all had a better foundational education about the area, we would have been following it weeks in advance, and had a more mature processing framework as the crisis unfolded. ⁣
⁣
Over the next few weeks—starting tomorrow— I’ll be sharing a mini series. The episodes will cover the last 100 years of a few countries to keep an eye on in the coming months: Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea, for starters. Background education, if you will. At the end of these first two episodes, pre-recorded weeks ago, I say that I will start Season 1 on West Asia/Middle East right away, because that was my plan. But I think it can wait a sec (though I do think this region’s going to be making headlines soon). ⁣
⁣
We are now seeing how having a sound foundation in world history is critical. We can haphazardly “catch-up” in the moment of crisis, or we can be wise and get educated first, ready to dive deep and help out when it’s time. I hope this podcast helps us become the latter. We can do this! ⁣

One night nearly two years ago I was driving to th One night nearly two years ago I was driving to the YMCA for a workout class with a friend. We were talking about the possibility of a pandemic (it was just starting to hit the news), and I was making predictions for how different world economies might handle a shutdown (as if I could ever have known! What a different world then 🥴). My friend is educated—she was a Labor and Delivery nurse for years—but she said something that stuck with me. “Alli. I know I’m supposed to know what you’re talking about, but I don’t remember! Help me! Teach me!” ⁣
⁣
I talk about this more in my first episode (which will launch in a few weeks), but after this experience I started asking around more to figure out how many other people felt like she did. Newsflash: she’s NOT the only one! I learned that almost every person who didn’t specialize in a world-related field or hasn’t travelled widely has her same reaction: this feeling of discomfort that they don’t know very much about parts of the world and they really wish they did. And they don’t want a deep dive course they have to sit through and watch, or take notes and be tested. They want to regain their foundational education while they are doing the dishes or commuting or folding laundry. Maybe you resonate with this? ⁣
⁣
I was a 9th grade world history teacher for years, so I have a unique investment in this barrier we adults seem to have about the world. Now that I don’t teach everyday, I feel it too… it’s hard to stay educated! But it also doesn’t feel good to not be. So that is why this podcast exists: to help people like my friend reconnect with the world in a way that’s not overwhelming. ⁣
⁣
Do you feel a little lost when certain areas of the world come up? Where are your biggest blind spots and I’ll be taking notes on how to help you out! 🤓 #wiserworld #worldeducation #globaleducation #globalliteracy

Studying the world both wakes me up and centers me.

I am a former 9th grade world civilizations/world geography teacher, and over the last few years I’ve started to see that most adults really don’t know too much about countries other than their own. The histories, the cultures, the political and economic situations… it seems we didn’t learn it well or we forgot it. And that’s okay—we can fix it. For two years now I’ve been stewing on how I can help. This podcast is my project to help people gain back their foundational knowledge of the world. I’m taking high school-level world studies and breaking it down for adults in an engaging and interesting way so you can be more informed and confident in what you know. I’m excited to share what I’ve been working on with you soon. 😁 I love the world, and I want a wiser one.
Pretty excited to say I’m launching Wiser World Pretty excited to say I’m launching Wiser World in March 2022! This is a podcast where we make world studies accessible to busy, curious people who forgot it all. We explore different regions of the world, giving you the facts and context you need to think historically about current events. The world is a big place, and it’s time we knew more about it. 🌎⁣
