I always try to look into the history and culture I always try to look into the history and culture of a place before I go there. Recently I was prepping to travel to Spain, and thought, “What if I made episodes that covered brief histories and cultures of places that are common travel destinations?” And the idea for the Know Before You Go episodes was born. 🤩 Made for travelers, or non-travelers who just want to learn more, I think you’re going to like these episodes.

There are many travel bloggers and podcasts who tell us where to go and what to eat and what to do. And I love using those resources! But what about the context, the history, the backstory? I know that when I know a bit of history, I ask better questions to locals, I understand my surroundings better, and I feel far more connected to the place and its people.

I am excited for many more Know Before You Go episodes, and hope you enjoy this one on Spain. I loved visiting Barcelona and the Costa Brava this month! If you know of anyone traveling to Spain, loves learning about Spain, or is going to live in Spain for a time—send this their way!

If right now someone asked you to define communism If right now someone asked you to define communism, or socialism, or capitalism, could you do it? Like top of your head, confident answers? If you are feeling 🫣, no shame. You’re not alone. A LOT of adults in the US do not know how to define these terms, yet they are used in the news and online all day every day, and it’s assumed we know. If you need a refresh, look no further—this is for you.

Personally, I believe that we have to know what these terms mean, and the history of the countries who have tried these theories in real life, before we can sprinkle them like confetti in the comment sections on political posts. These theories are wildly complex, yes, but also can be understood at a basic foundational level, and that’s what I’m going for here. I hope you learn something new!

Europe has many unique traditions, both highly rel Europe has many unique traditions, both highly religious and less so, for celebrating Easter. I also got to interview my friend Michal, who is from Slovakia, and we had way too good of a time laughing over his tradition (see my show notes for videos of what he talks about). I am excited to hear what you learn from this episode!

Note: You’ll see a picture in this reel of a line of people in conical hats with eye holes. In this episode I talk about the Semana Santa traditions on Sevilla, Spain. In some of the processions, people where these hoods, called “capirotes”, to hide their identity during penitence. So please don’t mistake these as KKK in the USA—rather this tradition dates back to the Spanish Inquisition of the 16th Century (still not a great time in history—the Inquisition was a long stretch of time when forced conversion to Christianity was one theme—but I wanted you to know what you are seeing is separate from the KKK.) Hiding identities is the common thread, yes, and just wanted to give you some context there. #easter #worldtraditions #pysanky #semanasanta #holyweek #europeantraditions #worldhistory #teachersofinstagram #wiserworld
My initial intention for this episode was to do a My initial intention for this episode was to do a global tour of Easter traditions around the world, but Europe alone filled up all the time! So many powerful and distinctive traditions, so little time. But now I’m hooked, so next year I’ll do more Easter traditions in other places.

Plus, I had a blast (I had to edit out so much laughter 😆) talking with my friend Michal about the unique Slovakian tradition at Easter. I think you’ll get a good laugh with us.

I think it’s critical for people of all beliefs and faiths to learn more about each other. Even within Christianity, many do not know about other denominations’ beliefs and customs. My vote is that we be curious, ask questions, make new friends, and embrace our shared humanity.

I promise I won’t be doing holidays for every sh I promise I won’t be doing holidays for every short episode this year, but spring is full of them! This Hindu holiday is coming up next week, and I think you’re going to love this episode. In just 12 minutes, you’ll know the stories, the traditions, and the food (of course, the food 🤤) involved in this beautiful holiday of Holi. Enjoy, and share if you learned something new.

*CORRECTION: In this episode I talk about how Hinduism is a polytheistic religion, when in reality the gods and goddesses of Hinduism are actually embodiments of one main god. Thus is appears polytheistic, but the system of Hinduism is monotheistic.

This week marks one year since I hit publish for t This week marks one year since I hit publish for the first time on Wiser World! I think I sweat through three shirts that day. 😅

I have come a long way since then—lots of trial and error, learning to let my vision for the show evolve, figuring out a workable rhythm for publishing. Oh, and I’ve learned how much people love analyzing podcasting voices (I had not given two seconds of thought to how my voice sounds until this year 😆).

Mostly I’m just glad I stuck with it, and that I am still creating something I’m proud of a year later. It’s been a good thing for me, on a personal level, and I’m glad it’s been helpful to others as well. It’s always been my goal to make the very thing I wish I had.

I thought for sure only my mom would listen, but now there are thousands of listeners every month and it shocks me every time I see it. 🤯 THANK YOU for listening and sharing and being curious, kind people. It is really rewarding to see so many good people wanting to learn about the world alongside me.

I want to celebrate today! Here are two ways you can help me:

1) Leave a comment below of something you learned this year from the podcast. I can’t wait to hear your responses! We’ve learned about 6 countries and 3 mini topics so far. It will make my week to hear what you remember.

2) Share the podcast, or an episode that you loved, on your social, in a DM, or a text message with someone!

Thank you again for listening. Lots of good things in store for year 2 here at Wiser World. 💙🌏

Hello! I realized the other day that in almost a y Hello! I realized the other day that in almost a year of podcasting, I’ve never done an “About Me” post. Whoops.

So here’s a little about me:

1. My name is Alli. Like all Allis (Allies, Alis, Allys, Alys…) on this planet, my name has been misspelled my entire life, so if you also have one of these kinds of names, I see you. I am you.

2. I used to teach 9th grade World History, and now I stay home with my kids. I started Wiser World when I realized that most adults I knew who had been out of school for awhile had forgotten (or never learned) foundational world history, and then struggled to find context for current events. Many felt disconnected and ignorant on global topics, which is no fun. So the podcast was born (after two long years of stewing about it, ha) to help solve that.

3. My brain is like a border collie: if it doesn’t have a project, it will destroy everything. 🤪 My podcast is the project that keeps me from fixating on silly perfectionist shenanigans I convince myself must be done (they don’t).

4. When grapefruit is in season, I could eat three a day, plain. Yup. I also discovered eggs benedict for the first time at 32 years old and can’t believe I lived that long without it. 😋

5. I read cookbooks for fun. Send me your favorites!

6. I cannot handle when people say, “Oh, I want to travel to Switzerland, Japan, Argentina, and Africa.” AFRICA IS A CONTINENT, NOT A COUNTRY. TO WHICH COUNTRY IN AFRICA DO YOU WANT TO GO. Yes, I get riled up about that one. 😬🙈#worldhistoryteacherproblems

7. I love learning the stories of people around the world, now and across the centuries. What they have been able to endure, overcome, and create is inspiring and very rooting to me in this chaotic world we live in. Studying the world gives me perspective, empathy, and, hopefully, a little wisdom, and I hope it does the same for you as you listen.

Thanks for being here and learning with me. 💙🌍🤓
